The aims are to acquire new vocabulary, develop grammar knowledge, develop the language skills: reading, speaking, listening and writing, introduce and revise common phrases of spoken English.

 

Grammar is treated in greater depth, as are pronunciation, reading comprehension, vocabulary and vocabulary usage. The use of everyday social expressions and idioms, and the context in which they are use, are also an integral part of the course.

Course Scope:

Grammar - The tense system, present perfect, simple and continuous, narrative tenses, questions and negatives, future forms, expressions of quantity, modals and related verbs 1, relative clauses, participles, expressing habit, modal auxiliary verbs 2, hypothesizing, articles, determiners.

Spoken English – informal language, being imprecise, fillers, news and responses, ‘like’, ‘how come’, ‘thing’, informal expressions of quantity, declarative questions, questions expressing surprise, ‘which’, intensifying compounds, expression with modal verbs, ‘if’, demonstratives and determiners.

Vocabulary – compound words; hot verbs – make, do, take, put, get, life, time; prefixes, antonyms, words with variable stress, adverbs and adjectives, homonyms, homophones, synonyms, word pairs.
